NIKO COLD WEATHER PACKING LIST FOR STAFF AND PARTICIPANTS

 

All applicants are responsible for bringing the following items. We do have a limited number of backpacks, sleeping bags, and foam pads available for rental. * Please inform us as soon as possible of your needs. If you bring something extra without prior approval (exception: prescribed medications), it will be confiscated and returned after completion of the NIKO. Clearly mark all personal items with your name. The clothes you wear to the NIKO count as part of the following list. Do not wear extra clothing.

If you require an inhaler or epinephrine-pen you must have yours with you or you will not be allowed to participate.

 

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS: (Should be protected from getting wet)

The following items are MANDATORY!

q       Complete Bible; pen, notebook OR journal/diary

q       Comb OR brush; toothbrush; sun-screen; lip-balm

q       Towel; washcloth (should be quick drying)

q       A pocket knife (should be sharp and not a stiletto, switchblade, or butterfly)

q       Unbreakable plate/bowl, cup/mug, fork, spoon

q       Three 32 oz or 1 liter water bottles, absolutely required

q       Flashlight with extra batteries

q       Sleeping bag (should be rated to 5 -15 1F we recommend a synthetic bag instead of down for premium Insulation in all types of weather) *

q       Thermal foam pad (insulates from cold ground, if you can¡¯t bring one we have rentals)*

q       Day pack (must accommodate all items needed for one day)

q       Back pack (must accommodate all items brought with you; you will be hiking with this)*

CLOTHES:**

q       One toque (beanie) OR cap, baseball cap

q       One pair of shoes/boots for hiking (these may get wet); one pair of shoes for non hiking times

q       One pair of ankle length hiking pants (should be loose fitting to reduce chafing)

q       One pair of long pants or sweats (modest please)

q       One bathing suit (modest please; girls may bring ¡°cover-up¡± clothing)

q       Six pairs of socks; four pairs of underwear, one pair of long johns OR Poly-proâ (top and bottom)

q       Two long sleeve shirts; three T-shirts

q       One sweatshirt, one sweater

q       One weatherproof jacket with hood

q       Rain gear (top and bottom OR poncho)

q       Optional items:

q       One bandanna OR scarf; one pair of gloves

q       One pair of thongs, sandals, OR water socks; one pair of gaiters

q       One pair of shorts for hiking;

q       Bug repellent (small squeeze bottle type) ; sunglasses

q       Watch; camera w/extra film (optional - we do not supply photos)

*Rental prices per NIKO: back pack - $7.00, sleeping bag - $7.00, foam pad - $1.00

**Clothes: Some items are interchangeable. For example, if you¡¯d like to bring four T- shirts and you are positive you will not need a sweater, sweatshirt, and a jacket; you may substitute one of those items for another T-shirt.
