NIKO PARENT INFORMATION PACKET Dear Parents, In
a NIKO, there are three main components developed as a result of pushing the
physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual limits. These are Servanthood
- If we were to use the analogy of a tree to illustrate how we see these
components working together, we may better understand how these aspects are
interconnected. Servanthood is the unseen root that determines the greatness of
the tree. It is the foundation for our lives. We hope your child experiences
the joy and fulfillment of serving others. We also desire for them to know
experientially other¡¯s pain, hurt, and limitations. As we give them this
exposure, we hope an attitude of serving -as the foundation for their lives-
can protect them from bitterness, unforgiveness, and the frustration of injustice. Leadership
Development - The final result we desire
to achieve is an obvious growth in leadership development. In the security of a
team, the idea of taking risks becomes far more achievable to a young person
learning how to make decisions. Each young person will have to take some form
of leadership in his or her life. Most will at least be family leaders and many
will take various degrees of leadership in church, ministry, and careers. Now
is the time to prepare them for the challenges of leadership in whatever
capacity it might eventually come. We recognize this is a lot to accomplish in such a short
period of time. We also recognize many of the young people may receive growth
in only one of the areas we have talked about. In addition, there may be many
changes in areas that we have not expected or listed here. Since the NIKO¡¯s
conception in 1985, we must admit that the lasting impact has been surprising
for such a short experience. We pray and trust that your
child will experience that type of impact on his or her life in the NIKO
experience. Committed
to this Generation, The

PARENT INFORMATION
NIKO deals with
three specific areas: 1. SURRENDER 2.
3.
LEADERSHIP All three areas
overlap at points, but together, give a clearer picture of each one
individually. Describing how they work together would be similar to the picture
on the right. The ¡°roots¡± of team building and discovering leadership ability
is surrender. ¡°The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. (Proverbs 1:7)¡±
A strong team consists of individuals who have surrendered their own lives to
the goal of supporting one another. Freedom
in leadership can be practiced in a safe environment where all members of the
team are working together for the common good. SURRENDER The word
surrender means, ¡°to give up possession of or power over; to abandon, to yield,
to give oneself up.¡± The challenges in the NIKO will bring the participant face
to face with the reality of who they really are and how surrendered their lives
are. In the NIKO, we desire to teach young people that there is more to life
than serving self. A life truly surrendered to God will have the capacity to
leave a lasting impression on the world and those people it touches. The whole area of
team building is a lost art in our present day North American society. More and
more, young people are encouraged to be self-absorbed and individualistic to the
point where they no longer recognize the gifts, strengths, and value of others.
We desire to teach them unity in diversity. We encourage individuals to
develop, but also to recognize that others can enhance and bring balance to
them. LEADERSHIP The NIKO is
designed to help young people begin to understand leadership and aspects of it
in their lives. We believe that leaders can be both born and taught. Our intent
is to help young people understand different roles of leadership as well as the
value and acceptance of those differences. We also assist them in learning that
leadership is not having power over people, but service to them. Our primary
example of leadership is, of course, Jesus Christ. We hope to help develop in
participants the kind of servant leadership He displayed to His disciples and
the world. |
